What is Debossing and How does it Work?

Promotional products are used to catch the eye of the consumer and make the consumer remember that product or company name! With today’s high definition TV’s and IMAX Movies, it is important to stay afloat with trends and stand out among the millions. Debossing can be that effect you are looking for.
Debossing is a letterpress term which describes the imprinting of an image that sits below the original surface. A tool called a die is used to cut the shape out of the material being used. Common materials include leather, paper, vinyl, suede, or even denim.
Once the die is created heat is pressed into the material to make the indentation. This provides a very clear image that pops out to the reader providing an extra professionalism and flare that will set your product apart from the competition.
The most common use for debossing is in promotional items such as company logo’s or names, and wrist bands to name a few. Debossing differs from embossing in that it goes below the original surface, where as embossing raises the letterpress above the surface.
Both can use ink or be done blindly (without ink) and while embossing is used more often, both create an interesting and eye-catching effect. Debossing is an easier technique to use and is more cost-effective.
Choosing graphics tends to be the most difficult when debossing. First, one must choose a material that will create a quality product and a product that will last!
It is recommended to stick to black and white graphics but even still the product created will differ from the initial artwork drawn on paper.
The main benefit to debossing is cost! The cost is determined by size not the detail of the graphic or letters. Because debossing surfaces tend to be small, cost tends to be less. Additionally, many choose to blindly deboss which means without ink and that costs less as well.
Debossing gives a cost-effective and simple product the eye-catching detail needed to successfully promote!
