Flash drives and memory sticks can have their own file icon that appears when you plug them into your computer.
You might already know how to create a custom icon for your main hard
drive or for CD's. This can also be done on a flash drive by following
these instructions:
This is a popular feature when using memory sticks for promotional
purposes. Have your company logo appear when the usb memory stick is
plugged into a usb port on your customers computer. We can supply this
service free of charge on all orders. We can also create your icon
files from any images that you supply to us free of charge.
Creating this icon is a simple task. You can download the files needed from this website.
Click here to download autorun.inf and favicon.ico files
The files that you should now have on your flash drive will be the following:
autorun.inf << (this file tells windows what to do)
favicon.ico << (this file is the image file referenced in the autorun.inf text file)
This is all the data that is on the .inf file this
basically tells windows to set the drive icon to the favicon.ico file
you can of course rename your .ico file to anything you want. However
you will need to update the file name within the autorun.inf file in
order for it to work.
What we need to do now is replace the favicon.ico
file with your own custom icon. If you don't have one already you can
upload your image to this website and automatically create one. We
would generally recommend using a 100mm x 100mm image file to start
from. You can download the image templates from this website by
clicking the link below. We have supplied them in .psd .jpg .png .eps
and illustrator .ai files for your convenience.

Please note these files have been saved with
transparency. Apart from the .jpg file which does not have this
capability. If you wish to have a transparent background you must
upload either a .gif or a .png file with the transparency set
accordingly. Ideally you want your image file to be a perfect square so
that it does not get distorted when the system converts it into a .ico
file.
Once you have downloaded the favicon.ico file you can
copy it over the file that is on your memory stick. As a last point we
can then hide the files so they do not appear on the
drive unless you or your customer has the "show hidden files" option
checked in windows. To do this we drag to select both files on the USB
flash drive and then right click to bring up a menu. From here choose
the "properties"option.
Once you have the window open, check the box next to
"Hidden". Click either "Apply" or "OK" and then close the window that
is displaying the contents of your flash drive. Eject the USB memory
stick using the option from the right click menu in "My Computer" to
safely eject the flash disk and save all information to it.
Now plug the flash drive back into the computer and you will see the drive icon has been replaced with your image!
We will be sending out Special Offers and Discount Codes via our RSS feed. If you click the link it will add the feed to Microsoft Outlook - Don't worry! It's not as scary as it sounds!
