Well today has been fun, we have been looking at other domains to possibly start a sister site on.

In our quest to find another premium URL we found that the non hyphenated version of our promotional products domain has been up for sale.

Well the question is should we be worried?  here is a transcript of our emails with the new site owner...

We are in Pink they are in black

Hi there,

I just noticed that you have purchased the non-hyphenated version of our domain.

We are solely UK based but often get US enquiries on our website.  I noticed you have a link to http://www...
Is this your company? are you solely US based? if so I would like to propose a mutually beneficial arrangement where we send US enquiries to your company.

Please let me know if you would be interested.

Also if you are interested in selling the domain to us... please let me know.

Thank you for your email.  We originally purchased this domain with the intention of turning it into a feeder site for http://www...
We’ve received quite a few offers to purchase, and would be willing to sell it for the right price.

"Promotional Products" is a very competitive term -

- Term is contained in thousands of domains. It is taken in 65+ .ORG alone.
- 6M+ Exact Google Results
- $4.21 - $5.97 Cost Per Click to Advertisers
- Google Searches/month -
- Phrase - 246,000
- Exact - 90,500

Owning an exact keyword match domain like this would directly increase your ranking in Google and bring more targeted traffic to your site….which I am sure you already know.

If you are interested in acquiring it, please make an offer.

I'm not about to fork out loads for it.  It was more a convenience thing. If you have a figure in mind let me know
I see it as less valuable to anyone else as we already own and rank highly with the hyphenated version.

Anyway good luck with your sale.

As a keyword specific domain…with some basic SEO effort we can achieve a top 10 ranking for the keyword on Google both in the US and the UK.  In the US, companies are currently paying north of $9.00/click just for this keyword…so it has tremendous value within the industry.

You are ranked #15 on Google UK for the term, not bad…..but still not in top 3-4 which would be optimal.

It is the best keyword specific domain left for the keyword “Promotional Products” as both the .com and .net are owned by promo companies.

Like I said...  if you have a price in mind let me know.

If not good luck with your "basic seo".

We would probably let it go for $30k US

Good luck with your sale.  Its not worth it for us... just for convenience sake.

And well that was that...  the question is should we be worried? other than the obvious that emails may goto the wrong address on occasion we are not really all that concerned. We are surely not going to throw $30,000 at someone to buy the non hyphenated version of our domain when we could spend that money adding hugely to our own SEO. We have spent a lot of time working on this site to offer good information to customers.

Anything on a similar domain would be an imitation of the previously established domain.  Google make a good effort of choosing between the 2 sites.  Anything established on a similar domain would have more catch up to do than if they started on a completly different domain.  That's just my thoughts anyway.  Don't get me wrong I would love to have it and point it to our current site purely for convenience more than anything else. But I'm not going to lose sleep over it and neither should you.

On an afterthought... well if they think that its worth $30k for that then what would an established promotional products site be worth?
